Costume & Character Designs
Although
Emma Ridley tried out for the role of Dorothy and was turned down, she did
manage to land the role of the Queen of Oz herself, Princess Ozma.
The Ozma costume, quoted as “the beautiful girl ruler of oz” is taken directly from the John R. Neil drawings.
Originally designed in gold, Ozma’s dress “Blended beautifully with the set” – rather too beautifully, it seems. Though the human eye could see the difference, the eye of the camera was unable to discern where the set ended and the dress began. So because of this her costume had to be remade – this time in white and emerald green.
Also part of Ozma’s costume included her royal wand. Ozma’s wand was made out of a glass tube, displaying the crystal letters “OZ”. It was then filled with liquid and sparkling flakes of gold. Any movement caused the gold to glide and glisten through the glass, a real visual effect.
In the end, the costume
worked out beautifully. It blended very well with the other characters and gold
like set, making her stand out as royalty.
